If someone buys that box as specified by us, it will work flawlessly.
The takeaway here is not that what we're recommending is bad, it's that
no matter what you use, the details of its configuration are critical.
I would be hard-pressed to identify a PC-compatible system you can buy
today that doesn't have some firmware setting that will cause the system
to be a brick. Not to mention that half the systems you can buy today
will now default to UEFI booting, which means they are bricks out of the
box.

Right, I know this problem very well as I debugged it myself. Again, if
you or anyone else would like to apply the GRUB change (the kernel
change is already present) to SmartOS, we would welcome that work. Or
just use SDC, which is open source and free to download. Or make sure
your systems are properly configured by your vendor as specified by
Joyent. There's absolutely no reason to get bitten by this firmware
bug; there are so many ways to avoid it.

All systems that have firmware have firmware bugs. Knowing how to avoid
them is the system integrator's function. With respect to the systems
listed in our documentation, Joyent has already performed that function
for you. If you wish to use something else, you will be performing that
work yourself. It is not for me to say which is preferable for you, but
I know I personally am always happy to have someone else do the heavy
lifting for me.
