Right, I know this problem very well as I debugged it myself. Again, if
you or anyone else would like to apply the GRUB change (the kernel
change is already present) to SmartOS, we would welcome that work.
I would love to do that work. Please let me know what further bits are
needed from me.
If all you need is a working USB image without the kernel and
boot_archive in it, I can easily provide one (as generated by the code
referenced in the commit above which already lives in smartos-live...)
