   I still prefer this approach for known resources; it will also make
   me polish up application/catman (automatic index generation [1]) to a
   suitable state for discussion.  (Basically, it needs a short start
   method to scan the directories, check that the index file is newer
   than any of the subdirectories of a given directory, and issue a
   catman -w invocation for that directory if not.)
