Perhaps they changed the hardware in the later iPhone 2G's. My old one  
would charge via USB or FW but only sync via USB. My iPhone 3G will  
only sync and charge via USB which meant replacing my Car Stereo as it  
would still play my tunes but not charge the phone whilst doing so  
(not very useful).
