I went from it working perfectly to not at all so I discounted 
these things. I went to the Apple store today and to my relief 
it worked fine with their monitor, so we exchanged the adaptor 
and hey presto it's back! I was aware it could have been the 
adaptor but it seemed somewhat unlikely.

slightly frustrating that I zero-erased the hard drive to keep 
my confidential data safe but Sam had recommended i do that 
after a recent crash so it just made me get on with it...
