I don't usually get into debate about responses to my posts. However
in this case I have yet to see any of the specialist Mac writers get
up in arms about Trojans that can infect OS X systems - as yet. Rather
the contrary is the case, as most have noted that while more attention
is being paid to OS X now than hitherto UNIX-based systems are
inherently better placed to make it difficult for malware writers to
produce workable infections.

All the articles that I have seen about OS X Trojans to date have been
written either by people employed by computer security businesses, or
by independent security specialists, keen to expand their portfolio of
services.

I'm not sure how many people new to SMUG and Macs have enquired about
malware but I venture to suggest it is very few. If SMUG was in the
business of advising people new to using Macs then surely some
commonsense prevention tips would make more sense than pointing people
at tosh written by O'Donnell and others of his ilk. Prevention
measures might include not opening file attachments from sources you
aren't sure of, torrent file-swapping services may be fine but are you
sure why the originator of the download you are requesting put it
there in the first place, beware of pirated software, and so on.

Using media that is of dubious origin is a bit like driving your car
and not wearing a seatbelt - do you want to take the risk?

For any new Mac user I'd recommend starting here -
