well, yes, but it's their job! I thought the one listed was
actually quite modest in its claims, to be honest.
IT is no longer true that there are no viruses/malware/Trojans
for Macs. It IS true you have to virtually load them in
yourself. So I'm not panicking or installing any AV software
just yet but 'they' are showing an interest so it's possible
there will be a slow and not very dramatic rise in the number of
such things.
I should have made it clear I'm not wearing an admin hat on this
one. I just think the dominance of strong reactions ('Mac users
should all run AV software!!!' "no they shouldn't run any there
is no danger") are actually both a little or a lot off-the-mark
now. There are some macs out there that are running Trojans and
our reaction should be appropriate tot hat reality -- a very
small risk, but a genuine one.
People wouldn't enquire about it if they didn't know about it. I
don't even know if there are any signs that you have this one if
you downloaded them.
I actually met someone who works in this industry. He was
slightly over-concerned about it, in the way that the dental
nurse I once knew was a bit over-concerned with dental hygiene.
But not because of profit particularly, just because it was his
thing. He thought mac users should run ClamAV or Sophos once in
a while, just to make sure they hadn't got anything lying around
that affects PCs and just in case there was a Mac virus or two
that had crept in. He didn't care about the money, he just had a
thing about computer viruses...
