*wince* - poor hard drives. ;-)

When I were a lad I used to service what were then high end systems  
with 10 MB drives whose platters were about 18" in diameter and which  
cost a good few thousand pounds. We actually used to take the platters  
out and lovingly clean them, then replace them in the drive and run  
alignment tests etc. Nowadays the youngsters drill holes in their  
unloved old drives, just for kicks.
