Hi James

Will it boot into Firewire Target Disk Mode (
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661 ) - this would allow the data to be
recovered from another Mac, assuming the disk isn't physically broken.

Is Leopard installed? If so, then Time Machine is the answer and a USB
hard disk big enough for the MacBook hard disk should be cheap as
chips: once it's registered as the Time Machine backup disk all they
have to do is plug the disk in every now and again.
