James,

Have a look at RescuePro at :

http://www.lc-tech.com/home.html

I got a copy free with a SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 4GB card for my
camera and have used it more than once to recover 'lost' photos,
including from a particularly flakey hard disk... Somewhat time-
consuming but very efficient !

Not all SanDisk cards come with the software offer (has to be
downloaded and registered for the machine you intend to use it on...
could be used from a bootable external drive attached to the
MacBook... My card was ordered from Amazon UK for £14.99 and came from
Indigostarfish in Jersey...

(Unfortunately, I don't think the unregistered version would deal with
your problem)

Good luck,

Paul B

(Apologies if this is a duplicate - think I sent to the wrong address

Hi all,

I found this all out far too late, but the parents mid-2007 MacBook
started to have problems - programs crashing, constant beach-ball when
trying to shutdown etc. and now they get the dreaded flashing question
mark when trying to boot it.

They've spoken to Apple support (it's under AppleCare) on the phone &
they tried the Disk Repair utility, it apparently can't fix it (a
filesystem error). Apple will happily replace the HD under warranty
(something I want them to do as the drive also clicks), but it turns
out there's no backup & a bunch of photos in iPhotos they would be
devastated to loose.

What are the realistic chances of getting the data off the disk? I've
read about Disk Warrior, is this really any cop? If so, would someone
like RH Computers have this tool available? or, do you think Apple
would send the dying disk back with the fixed macbook, so I could have
a try at recovering the data?

Another option I know is data recovery people, but that's very
expensive. Are there any other options available?

My final question is what would be the best cost-effective backup
procedure for non-tech-savvy parents?

Thank you in advance,

James
