Hi James

The MacBooks initially had a lot of hard drive failures, all from a  
specific model of SeaGate hard drive, the momentus 7200 with firmware  
7.14. The read/write head actually came off the arm and scored the  
surface of the disk. When this happens the disk is completely  
unrecognised so doesn't sound like your case. How far does the drive  
get in being recognised?
