I guess it all depends how much you crave the 3G S? If it's a 'must
have' then you might consider buying a PAYG iPhone 3G S and put your
existing SIM card into it. Consider the remainder of your existing
contract as a sort of offset towards the cost of buying the 3G S. I'm
sure someone will find a flaw in my math to disprove my idea but here
goes;
If I wanted a 16GB 3G S on the same contract as now I could pay the
penalty of a lump sum payment of the existing 18 month contract - 6
months @ £35 approx. = £215, pay £185 for the 3G S and start a new 18
month contract which will end in Jan 2011, once more in no man's land
as far as product refreshes are concerned. Total £400 plus £35 per
month from Jul 2009
Or pay £440 now for a PAYG phone put my existing SIM in it - good
till Jan 2010 and then take out a new contract at £35 per month in Jan
2010 which will end Jun 2011 - the most likely time for the 3rd
product refresh for the iPhone 3G. But you might be able to get a
shorter, or better, contract by January 2010 as it is a continuation -
who knows?
By my math, the premium is £40.
If you want to upgrade to a 32GB phone then the math is a bit
different but basically the premium is an additional £90 over the 16GB
version - if you consider that worth it.
if you haven't got the cash right now then it's all immaterial and if
you have, then with interest rates as they are you might consider the
PAYG option as a good idea.
You can probably get a fairly decent price for the 3G on eBay bearing
in mind that O2 are asking £340 for the 8GB one on PAYG. Or recycle it
to someone else in your family.
I used the 17.5% VAT contract rate as the slightly lower value only
applies until the end of 2009.
I would expect quite a lot of PAYG iPhone business with O2 over the
next several weeks from the early purchasers of the 3G as the premium
seems to be just over one month's contract cost.
