Hi Virginia

It sounds like you power unit is broken or the computer needs to have
its Power Management Unit reset.

I assume your macbook is one with a fixed battery, i.e. one you cannot
remove yourself? If it is then try the following. Be sure to read the
instructions then give it a go, it is important to do the steps in the
right order and exactly as they are written here...

1. Shut down the computer. (unless it is already off of course!)
2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it
to the Mac if its not already connected.
3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Ctrl-Alt keys
and the power button at the same time.
4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

If your computer has a removable battery let us know as the procedure
is different.
