Just to finish the story, because it may help other smuggers. I tried the various suggestions made on the list. They didn't work. I sent a lot of time on the phone to Apple, who tried very hard. But it was not possible to get iwork working. The problem was that the plist files had been replaced by the plist files for the trial version. The only way to regenerate the non-trial files was by re-installing form the dvds or buying an iwork serial number. Apple kindly offered to sell me a replacement iwork at 50% reduction.
