Another thing that can be handy is to manually drop certain emails into a 
generalised folder and then create a set of smart folders which pull out items 
of interest. Smart folders can be used on top of rules as well of course.

Also, mail rules can move a message to a specific folder but the rules 
themselves are not 'attached' to any specific folder - other than the Inbox 
that is.
