I'm afraid the answer to all these suggestions is no. Can't ever see serial 
number (or at least haven't found a way); old machine fell out of an aeroplane 
locker and has no screen (and who knows what else); and the get info doesn' 
tseem to give the serial number.

I wil try phoning apple care and the local apple shop but not tomorrow: I'm 
away all day.
