Sam,
Is there any way I can force Mail to re-cache a specific message and
attachment? I have an email from a few days ago where the attachment
has not yet cached and I need it now.

I've always had a problem with Mail taking an inordinately long time
to fully cache certain attachments, especially from IMAP servers.
It's much better in Snow Leopard but still sometimes slows to a crawl.
