Thanks, Sam. Resetting the PRAM solved one problem — the alt key at startup now works and I can select my startup disk. Very many thanks.
Starting up from a CD/DVD is still a problem. If I try it with my Snow Leopard Install disk whether using the alt key and selecting the DVD or using the C key I end up with the black screen telling me to switch off and restart. If I try it with my Disk Warrior (4.2) disk I get a plain white screen. Resetting the SMC (using left hand Shift-Ctrl-Alt-power keys held down simultaneously and then released simultaneously) doesn't make any difference.
