Best thing to do in this situation :

get a portable usb hard drive
install OS X onto it by booting from the OS X installer dvd that came with your
Mac and select the external drive
boot from the drive and update to the latest version of OS X
install diskwarrior

Then you can boot from the disk anytime to repair the drive, provided of course
you can select a startup disk, after resetting the PRAM of course ;)

There are ways to create a drive that will boot both PowerPC and intel macs but
PowerPC macs are becoming increasingly less common as people upgrade.
