Best thing to do in this situation : get a portable usb hard drive install OS X onto it by booting from the OS X installer dvd that came with your Mac and select the external drive boot from the drive and update to the latest version of OS X install diskwarrior
Then you can boot from the disk anytime to repair the drive, provided of course you can select a startup disk, after resetting the PRAM of course ;) There are ways to create a drive that will boot both PowerPC and intel macs but PowerPC macs are becoming increasingly less common as people upgrade.
