I have a repeating problem when I get a machine back from Mac hospital, which affects my use of time machine and capsule. I wonder if anyone knows a way out of this. I'm afraid I have to give a bit of background.
When I send a computer away to be fixed, I have 2 backups: one is on a time capsule. The other made using databackup is on an external disc. I use the external disc to run a second computer as if it were my sick machine, via target model. So the backup disc becomes the computer and I can run on an old machine, if with some difficulty and a big loss of performance. When I get the sick machine back, cured, I copy all the changes from this backup disc onto the now cured machine. In this way, iI have a machine with everything on it, including all the work, mails, and changed files that I have produced while the machine was in Mac hospital. However, when trying to connect with time capsule/machine, the formerly sick machine is identified, by time machine/capsule, as a new machine. I cannot get it to recognise the recovered machine as the machine that I sent off to hospital, even though it is the same. Something changes in the name of the disc, and even when I reset it by hand from the system prefs>>sharing, I cannot get the repaired machine and the last backup I did of it before sending it to hospital to recognise each other, leaving me only with the possibility of a complete backup from scratch. a 300Gb backup across airport/wifi takes forever, and I have to throw away the old backup and the history that goes with it. I have now had this happen on several occasions. And it's tiresome, tedious and very unproductive. Has anyone any idea what I should do? I have read the help files. Thanks for any help! Best, Ranulph PS I managed to upgrade to iOS 4.1 without any problems, Thanks for the hand holding. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Sussex Mac User Group" group.
