Hi Peter I've never had a problem with Mail in 10.6 personally, my clients had far more problems with Mail in 10.5 or below. At one point, any mailbox over 1GB tended to corrupt and needed to be split into manageable chunks then reimported, I've found 10.6 to fix many of those problems.
I've never seen websites distorted by Safari either, but that's just my experience. Perhaps your machine needs reinstalling? Are you using any 3rd party additions to OS X or Apple Mail?
