ok, its time to be really specific about what's going on. Your original message didn't make sense to me ("refusing to restart, just showing the sleep button" -- what does showing the sleep button mean?)

Does it start in Target disk mode at all?
Does it start in single user mode at all?
will it do anything when it starts? the chimes then nothing? or what?
does it do anything?
tried removing the battery and plugging it in (if it can be removed)?
have you opened it and checked eg connections to hard drive?
does power light come on green or orange?

did you do anything apart from be under a Maclipse?*
*anything*?
does the battery light indicator work?
does it start up from an external drive?

etc.

of course you HAVE A BACK-UP DON'T YOU.

sorry to rub it in. If you don't start after this, you're a lost cause.
Time Machine and recent Clone. anything less is not a back-up.

*You have no idea how funny this is to me. I have published a book and article and countless reviews on issues relating directly to this topic. Believe me, I know about eclipses as divinatory signs;)

and, er, it's not the eclipse.

Sorry;)
