We have an HP D5360 which is tremendously expensive on inks. On top of that,
over the Christmas break, two print heads dried up and I've been unable to
clean them to get a good print since. I've been through TWO sets of cartridges
trying to clean the heads and have given up. I now use the printer ONLY as a
memory card reader for the 4 card options it provides! Expensive card
reader!!!!!

We also have an Epson 2880 which is brilliant. A4/A3/roll printing and the
choice of Photo Black and Matt Black for different requirements. No head
blockages and the oem inks are about £9 each. Not the cheapest (when it uses 8
inks) but worth it for the quality.

I know not everyone will agree.

John

I have an HP and find it MUCH more economical on ink than the Epson I used to
have. I am so pleased with it I gave the Epson (and several unused cartridges)
to a friend who I knew could afford to keep replacing the cartridges.

Forget rules of thumb!

Hi Phil,

Forget HP. Notoriously expensive cartridges. Printers are disposable items...

The rule of thumb from what I have been told over and over is:

Epson
Canon
or Brother.

I have had a Brother MFC fax/copier/printer/scanner that is 4 years old. Great
color on just crap paper. I order ink online. GENERIC CHEAP! and it works fine.
You guys have Cartridge World in UK and no doubt some other ink refill places.

I assume you get Brother brand there, too. They get good reviews.

Just look for the type you want and look up the reviews. The Brother seems to
do well with the generic cheapo ink!

All,

This is part rant and part plea for A4 printer suggestions.

I went in to PC World in Hove today to buy some ink for my Canon Pixma 4200
printer. It only actually needs one colour replaced but I thought I may as well
buy a full set 'cause I know I have no spares and if I came home with just one,
sods law would probably ensure that another would run out almost immediately.

As ever I was utterly appalled that buying full set of ink (£70) would cost
considerably more than buying a new printer, and I came close to indulging in a
childish rant at member of PC World staff. Now I know there's always the
"compatible ink" route, or buying online from Amazon, but the former I've tried
and it's never been a success (obviously my understanding of the term
"compatible" is a bit old fashioned), and the latter isn't really all that much
cheaper (a new printer would still be cheaper).

So anyway, I left PC World steaming and with just criminally one over-priced
ink cartridge, and resolved to buy myself a new printer with the cash I didn't
spend. So who can recommend an A4 printer (printer/scanner would be nice)
that's reliable, good enough for general non-critical work, and won't send my
blood pressure through the roof (and cash reserves through the floor) when the
ink runs out?

Phil

PS. Anybody want a perfectly good Canon Pixma 4200 printer? It's got a new cyan
cartridge in it but some of the others might be close to empty – after which it
effectively becomes a worthless piece of junk.
