1) I'm assuming it's a MacPro, are we talking about the front or back ports? Front are easy to replace, back are soldered to the motherboard as far as I know 2) Try holding D to boot from the hardware diagnostic disc, they've always come up in startup drive selector for me 3) Sounds very plausible indeed, especially as the FW port is powered
Have you tried an SMC reset? Power cable out for 30 secs then reattach. How about resetting the PRAM?
