Firewire seems to be disappearing from cameras at an alarming rate, which i
think is a shame, but then i suppose the tape based workflow is too, so
hooray for no more logging and transfering tapes.

iMovie has always been much easier to import video with than final cut for
example, and I've only used it with semi-pro sony cameras. V1 Z1 etc.
Obviously it works great with those. iMovie has a compatibility list here
- http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US
Set the drop downs for device type to camcorder, and region type to PAL, and
pick from one of the many results for a suitable sounding camera.

I'd recommend a sony or a panasonic handycam style camera because they are
quite easy to use, and there are sony and panasonic stores in brighton where
you may be able to try out the gear. I wouldn't get too bogged down with
wether it records in HDV or AVCHD or to flash or hard disk... just get a
camera where it feels comfortable and intuitve to use, and you like the look
of the footage you record if you get a chance to test it. (and obviously
that is in the imovie compatibility list so that you can actually do
something with all the footage you shoot.)
