Thanks Sam. At least I now know that I can log in, and that if the message has been opened on the iMac, then it shows as having no messages in mail2web. And I can send from the account on the iPhone. But it is still not able to collect messages (I've been sending loads from my .mac account to my partners and can collect them on mail2web, but not on the iPhone. I know that if I open a message on mail2web then it isn;t going to show on the iPhone - but if I try to get a mail on the iPhone first, I get "Cannot get mail. The mail server is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings"
But it works for mail2web??!!
