In my experience, duplication is virtually nonexistent in iCloud's calendars compared to MobileMe. I'd say take the plunge and upgrade, especially as your MobileMe account will close in June anyway. Perhaps wait for a quieter time so you won't be completely stuck if it goes wrong!
