I've just noticed a new "you've plugged me in to charge" noise too.

Well, I installed iOS7 on my iPad2. It all went very smoothly and quite
quickly. I *think* I like the new interfaces and design. Intellectually, I
kind of support the Ives' approach of iconoclasm. Looking at it now it
seems very sugary and bright. Must find a good wallpaper to experience it
to best effect.
Aside from the aesthetic experience, it all functions pretty much as
before. There seem to be extra features in iPhoto, Maps and a nice
experience of everything talking to everything else...

Thanks for the advice and commentary everyone.

Thanks for that info, Adam (and Russell)

I have an iPhone 4 and really didn't want to update it, after the same
dismal experience with my 3G.

But I'm going to be brave now and update - possibly even this afternoon :-)

Best wishes

My twopenneth:

Even on my trusty iphone 4, this is a brilliant update.

It works brilliantly, and the few places it lags a fraction, are
insignificant. Moreover it's outweighed by speed improv ents elsewhere eg
Spotlight, Camera.

At first, I wasn't hugely in favour of the UI overhaul, but really prefer
it after a half fu use. My wife's iOS device now seems dated.

Nothing is there for the sake of it. Hence animations and transparencies
aren't eye candy (merely) they help me navigate and interact a whole lot
better with the device.

Stock apps are much nicer to use all round, and it really is like having a
new device. It's a smart move ensuring those on 4 year old devices (hardly
old-old) are now in the iOS7 ecosystem. I'm now much more likely to become
reliant on the features of my most used apps that will mean a new handset
will one day be needed!

It's vastly superior to iOS6 in many, many ways. And I loved 6. I couldn't
imagine how such seemingly minor tweaks would make a phone so much more
useful at what I need it to do. But they do.

FYI if you've not updated, I backed up and then updated on device. It took
45mins all said and done and couldn't have been easier.

Fears and errors when iOS 4 ruined my 3G are but a distant memory. Apple
have not made those errors again and reports that the 4 can't handle ios7
are clearly from folks who are used to the speed of a 5.

It works splendidly.

Thanks Russell et al, for very helpful posts that convinced me to update!

Oh I'm going to have to join y'all!

Thing is, do I just hit 'update' which is preferable for speed and ease,
or, do I do a 'restore' and start from scratch?

Does it make a difference to performance overall?

Thanks

So far I think it's a big step forward. Aside from the visual facelift
dragging it into the modern age and the removal of the horrendous
skeuomorphism, the remote activation-lock should hopefully bring down
iPhone thefts.

Not too sure about the iBeacon technology, hopefully retailers will use it
sparingly and we won't be bombarded with localised adverts & offers as we
walk through shops.

Haven't managed to get AirDrop to recognise my fiancée's phone yet, but
then there are already hundreds of pictures of our dog on there, no need to
transfer any more to her.

I'm looking forward (nervously) to Russell's reports of how things are on
his iPhone 4!

Just heard that Fantastical is soon to release v2, iOS7 only, with some
much wanted features. This will be the future for most apps I should think,
so might be forced to go to iOS7!

Russell - is it working nicely?!?!

If it's too laggy, I'd rather not...!
