Hi Michael, Sorry to hear you are having problems with your mac. I would defiantly get a second opinion before proceeding to spend that much money. Many independent companies offer free diagnostics of some kind. If they are all saying the same thing i.e. corrosion or faulty display then choose the best quote.
I understand your mac is out of warranty but it may still be worth booking an appointment with the genius bar at your local Apple store. I had a white macbook and the disk drive stopped mounting CDs and had to be replaced. The mac was out of warranty by a couple of months but Apple still did the work free of charge.
