We have a MBP, MBA and an iPad with a keyboard. All are good in their own way, but I would not be without having a proper computer (the MBP or MBA) when on the move. Still too many things we can't do properly just on an iPad. But it also doubles up as a tethering device when running a 3G chip in it, wherever we are. We've just shut down a Mac Pro and an iMac and now have the portable devices connected to external screens and keyboards when at home/office and just take them with us when we are on the move.

We've always found Apple very helpful when we've had a problem. We even got a discount from an Apple store's business section when recently buying a MBP and Thunderbolt display. They costed up what we wanted and it was of course at full/normal price. We found Debenhams Plus were selling the 27" Thunderbolt display at a discount (its still currently around 10% off), so we told Apple we'd buy the MBP and AppleCare from them and the display from Debenhams. They revised the costs and gave us around 6% discount on the entire order - making it the best price overall.

I had an iMac that developed fault after fault; monitor developed strips of blankness, DVD stoppedworking, something else (oh, ethernet was replaced under warranty)...I put another monitor on it and it lasted ten years all told. For me, if something breaks they're never the same but if it doesn't, you're good for years.

But as for iPad etc I've just gone the other way and bought a MBA because I'm too much of a keyboard person to use an iPad on the go (yes, I have an external keyboard but it's not the same). Rather than get an iPad you might get the entry MBA for 700 quid.

I agree about taking it to the Apple store: it's a bit random but you hear lots of stories about them being generous or offering refurb deals etc.

I don't think build quality has gone down
