I had an iMac that developed fault after fault; monitor developed strips
of blankness, DVD stoppedworking, something else (oh, ethernet was
replaced under warranty)...I put another monitor on it and it lasted ten
years all told. For me, if something breaks they're never the same but
if it doesn't, you're good for years.
But as for iPad etc I've just gone the other way and bought a MBA
because I'm too much of a keyboard person to use an iPad on the go (yes,
I have an external keyboard but it's not the same). Rather than get an
iPad you might get the entry MBA for 700 quid.
I agree about taking it to the Apple store: it's a bit random but you
hear lots of stories about them being generous or offering refurb deals
etc.
I don't think build quality has gone down
