Perhaps the firmware on the drive makes it difficult for it to shift down to 
USB2. Try plugging it into a USB2 port on a newer Mac, either a separate USB2 
hub or the side of the Apple Wired Keyboard will do. If the drive doesn't show 
up then we know it's the USB2 downshift rather than the older/newer operating 
system clash.
