Sorry for the delay in replying - have not had access to the machine in question for a week!
What an interesting fault! I don't understand this, but the 10.9 machine does not register the drive at all when the USB Hard Drive is plugged into one of the USB ports on the side of the machine but it DOES when I use an apple USB keyboard and plug it into the side of that! At any rate, I have ordered another (different) Hard Drive and hopefully that will not suffer the same problem!
