There should be a diagnostic option for start-up from the original DVD. I think it's 'hold down command -d' but google the exact model.

If you have another HDD or Macbook (and FW cable) available, you could try starting up in Target Disk mode and running Disk First Aid (or, better, Diskwarrior). Or from an external disk.

It does sound potentially like the HDD so if you can try starting from another one, that will help identify what is wrong. I put an SSD in one of these the other day and it flies now (though I hope you have a back-up!) But it could be something else so don't go and buy any new kit just yet.

Thanks Sam.

Tried the SMC reset, alas didn't do anything.

Reinstalled 10.6 (twice) but both times all seems ok at first, but then when trying to get past welcome screens/registration, it gives me the pizza
wheel and the whole thing freezes.

So....

1. Could it be the HDD?
2. If so, would an old HDD from my MacBook Pro fit as a replacement?
3. If so, can I just insert and reinstall OS and see what happens?
4. If not the HDD, any thoughts?
5. Could having let the computer shut itself down with 0% battery, whilst playing a DVD, have caused this?!? Be good to know for the future - all seems rather coincidental given the unit has been such a reliable workhorse
since 2008!

Any help appreciated...

Thanks,

Adam

Hi there

Last night my wife was watching a DVD on her Macbook (2008 Alu unibody)
and let the battery die whilst watching it, thus the computer went to
sleep/off.

She tried to reboot it today and it won't boot... the Finder never fully loads and one only gets the rainbow pizza wheel (left it for up to 8mins).

There is no sound of the HDD working, and no response to any key commands (such as quitting the Finder). The same thing happens in safe mode, and I've also reset the PRAM but to no affect. The only way to turn it off is hold
down the power button.

Any ideas? Really hoping I've not got to find the install disks and start
again?

Thanks all,

Adam
