If it is useful to anyone else, I managed to get in touch with Apple in the end
via phone and, although it took over an hour, the Apple adviser managed to try
every possible combination of emails and passwords and eventually admitted
defeat and supplied me with a new version of the "Pages" app! She took over the
screen to check what I was doing. She was very patient and helpful - determined
to fix it for me. I'm impressed.

That’s a good point Nick.
I couldn’t initially update Numbers either - got the same error. However,
Numbers WAS on the purchased tab and so I was able to download that. :-)
I could not (and still cannot) download Pages though. I used the Apple ID
support and requested a call. Here’s how to get there:
www.apple.com/supportScroll down the page to “Get help with Apple ID” - click
the linkClick on “Contact Support” in the left hand columnClick on the box
titled “iTunes Store & App Store”Click on the box titled “The topic is not
listed”
You should be able to find your way from there.
Best of luck.

Phil,It just seems worthwhile to suggest that you check in the App Store under
the ‘Purchased’ tab, not just with your Apple ID but also with any other family
members. I discovered that all previously downloaded software is listed
there. But hopefully a phone call will sort it if all else fails.Nick

The App store tells me that I have an update available for Pages, but when I
try to download it I get the message "This update is not available for this
apple id because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or
cancelled." The only explanantion I can think of is that perhaps my wife or
sons (who each have their own User accounts on this iMac) purchased Pages
originally. Noneof them can remember doing this (and it is unlikely that they
did) What can I do?
