Personally I don't use any antivirus software, macOS has Xprotect and SIP to
keep the system in check and if you need it MalwareBytes AntiMalware is free
and scans on-demand to remove any adware showing you extra adverts online.
Culprits include Geneio, Spigot and Vsearch which run in the background and
inject adverts into web pages, earning the authors revenue.

I find common sense to be the most effective protection these days. I don't
stream football from dodgy websites which require a software installation to
work, I've removed adobe flash and use AdBlockPlus. I think a lot of the cases
I've seen recently are when people get drawn in with fake flash updates which
then install adware programs.

As far as actual virus which gets into your Mac with no action on your part
goes, I've not seen one in the wild yet. All the antivirus programs I've seen
so far have been I'll-designed, badly optimised and problem-causing rather than
fixing.

Of course it's entirely up to you how you want to protect yourself online, you
could try reinstalling avg or updating it to the latest version, or try Sophos
(also free) instead.

Regards

Sam

I have deleted AVG So I was able to delete these suspect e-emails. I not
completely unprotected because I have also cleanmymac3 on my Mac; I suspected
AVG was the problem. So what alternatives are out there please? AVG had the
benefit of being free. Alas there is no such thing as a free lunch of course!!
