Echoing Sam's wonderfully thorough response, I'd add that I've never used Anti-Virus software on any of my Macs, even before installing the OS X public beta (prior to 10.0!) and have never had virus issues.
Common sense is the best defence (poetry!). Weirdly, the only rubbishy and very annoying pop up ads/redirects are on my and my partner's more secure and tied down iOS devices, which seems ironic ...
