It was a purity law (ceremonial law).  It was more likely a prohibition to prevent spread of disease, and there could have also been a component of it being the thread of life.  The blood carries all sorts of bacteria and other microscopic creepy crawlies.

anyone know what the restrictions were put on the eating of blood  in leviticus?

was it overall because blood is the lifeline or did i miss something?
