This is true. You were ceremonially
unclean if you touched blood. Hence the women being separated from the men
for certain weeks.

It was a purity law (ceremonial law). It was more likely a prohibition to prevent spread of disease, and there could have also been a component of it being the thread of life. The blood carries all sorts of bacteria and other microscopic creepy crawlies.
