While at the gym this week, I was reading about all of the new 500 hp cars
coming out of Detroit. The car in question, the 2006 Z06 Corvette
(http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/futuremodel.aspx?familyid=879&pictureid=0
&usage=image&src=vip) has a small block 427 spitting out 500 hp and 475 lbs
of torque. The interesting item that affects us modelers is the floor pan.
To keep the car as light as possible, there are copious amounts of carbon in
the car, but the floor pan uses a balsa core with CF skins.

Since my household income isn't currently 6 figures a year, there is little
chance of me ever owning one of these cars. But, the maintenance on this
car would be a killer! There are 6 individual brake pads for each rotor,
lots of CF in the body and more high tech stuff than I'm used to in a car.
One disappointment is the use of a steel muffler instead of the titanium the
current high-end Vette has. Oh well.

So now it's not only boats that use up our precious amounts of balsa, but
cars too. I'm sure JB already knew this though. :) gv
