It's a huge complex on Van Nuys Blvd. Many city events are held there. Did everyone fill in the survey? Did everyone see how they can get paid for participating? If not, then read my answer below, and see that I am promoting individuals be paid for installing and running the base station nodes. This could be you earning extra hundreds of dollars a month. I definitely think you should all promote that hundreds of "individual consulting experts," not 3 or 4 firms, get paid for doing wifi. Notice I want web access to be free to everyone. BTW, I've installed several years ago 2 free wifi access points in a project to provide free wifi to Los Angeles, as well as helped on two others. We brainstormed an infrastructure that would funnel the money directly to the service providers (you) for running the system and assist residents installing wifi cards and configuring them. There has been continuing interest in reviving this project, as the Mayor decided he would take up the baton and point to our efforts as the beginning of his project. Any Radius experts on this list? -- Here is my answer to the bottom fill in form: Question 8 should have a fill. My answer would be Public/Private Partnership - Private consultants and firms will build the wireless Internet network to a standard specification (to be determined by the participating experts - similar to the Santa Monica City Solar Initiative), individual consultants will operate one or more gateway nodes, all base stations, antennas, cables, and uplink bandwidth will be paid for by the City. The city will pay the base station operators and installers, and run a central user database for access authentication to free and cost item applications. Free web access to everyone for information access to reduce the divide. Email accounts will be subsidized for the poor, as will the needed wireless cards for their computer. Paid premium accounts will include access to web sites restricted by parental control (those viewing porn will have to pay in full, if porn is even allowed, as the bandwidth will impact everyone, and that is not good), paid pr! emiu m accounts will include video and sound services like Skype, NetMeeting, and other high bandwidth usage that impacts everyone, that needs to be paid for, that subsidizes the poor hardware and access costs. Gold premium services like serving streaming audio and video are high cost items. Any city employee accessing the system will have to pay the full cost from their department budget, no free rides (most times access will be to web site intranets, so would be free anyway). Truly, more of the costs will have to be paid out to individual consultants who are geographically located in the area, so the consultant bears the cost of electricity as the hardware is located in their office or their home, to avoid the city having to rent thousands of locations similar to how cell phone antennas are located every 1/4th mile. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "SOCALWUG" group.
