I unfortunately did not make it to the meetings because of prior engagements but does anyone have any feedback? I would be interested in hearing what went on. I noticed that there are a lot of RF gurus on this list so I won't be able to add much there but I know different hardware platforms pretty well. From what I understand the most important factor in increasing the capacity of a mesh network is the backhaul. Traditionally these were only done via some copper or fiber based medium directly connected to the the AP but today munis are deploying mesh in conjunction with dedicated point to multi-point systems specifically used for backhaul to numerous mesh nodes throughout the city or community. I am sure most of you know what I'm talking about but I worked up a quick graphic with some icons that we made...http://www.wlanmall.com/images/muniwifi.jpg. This pic shows two point to point bridges but you get the drift...This is a good way to reduce wired bandwidth costs and hardware costs as you really only need several key sites to be "wired in" to the internet. These sort of topologies are being pushed by Motorola, Proxim, Strix and on some smaller level Tranzeo...If you want more specific info on these platforms and how each piece will/would play a role let me know.
Now on another note, my feeling is that the only way you can viably deploy a muni-mesh network is to get public safety and muni utilities to become the major users of the network. With this in mind LA might be able to use some of its millions in public safety money to roll out the deployment, while re-couping CAPEX from selling internet to the public off of the same APs. With todays virtual AP or multi SSID technologies this should be a feasible scenario. Just my 2 cents...Have a good weekend. Kind Regards, Ronen Isaac Continental Computers/WLANmall.com 920 N.
