Mike- The ferry travels in a arc across the San Francisco bay, from Oakland/Alameda to the ferry terminal. Total distance is about 7.5 miles. We use directional antennas on one end of the link - using them on both ends means you have to get into handoffs and network changes that just complicate, and don't really add to the solution.
Here's the ferry company website: http://www.harborbayferry.com. We are the company that designed, built and operates the system for them. You can find more info about us at http://www.wfinet.com (the parent company) or the new company that is doing the work http://www.secureplanet.com. Do you have anything online about your setup? What's the range and coverage of the backhaul? I assume the ferry travels a generally direct path between two points. Do you use directional antennas on each side of the bay? Thanks! Mike -- Mike Outmesguine President, TransStellar, Inc. We have a WiFi enabled ferry in the Bay area that is working fine. It has WiFi on board, and a WiFi backhaul link (by the way, shots to moving targets are a lot more challenging).
