What a great idea...site survey kit

I have been working with a Linksys WAP54G access point (rated for 802-11B or
G and some of their new hi-gain antennas. The laptop I am using has a
Microsoft mn-720 pcmcia card in it rated for 802-11B or G service.

I have been trying to get some data that would help me to survey sites (my
own first) and the results are really poor. The laptop has a signal strength
display with 5 bars. I get a repeatable 2 or 3 bars consistently. When I put
the hi-gain antennas on the display did not change - varying from 2 to 3
bars.

Also the display shows the speed at which I am connected. It ranges from 5.5
to 36 without any basis for changing.

I was at Wescon last week and there was a really nice hand-held Field
strength analyzer (Protek 3290, $2500) but this seems like overkill as I am
really only interested in a couple of wifi frequencies.

Any ideas on this?

Thanks,

Subject: [SOCALWUG] Putting together a site survey kit

I'm trying to put together a site survey kit for 802.11b/g
applications. The sites I would be visiting would mainly be for indoor
applications but, there would be a small number of courtyard/garden
requirements also.

I would like to include a variety of antennas but, I think it
would be impractical to bring one of everything. What do you think
would be an essential assortment?

Some of the other things I'm thinking of including: A tri-pod,
digicam, duct tape, painter's tape, extension cord, ethernet cables,
folding traffic cones, ruler, flashlight, extra paper and writing
utensils.

Any advice and feedback would be appreciated.
