just to add to this, my attempt failed with Virtualbox, there is no
(well I couldn't find it) pass through of the CF device to the virtual
machine.

Any way I build my vm, installed stuff I wanted, installed the i486
kernel not the i686 (is i686 okay with net5501 ?) copy the image over to
the CF installed and booted, all I saw was a pxe request from the 5501 -
didn't have a null modem cable at home, so i have my box at work where I
have a usb serial cable I will see what is happening !
