What we did for ADSL was testing different modems under different providers. We 
chose the best one and bought a pile of those. Then we started using Soekris + 
certified modem as a bridge, as a standard setup.

I don't know if this kind of thing is doable with VDSL as it is not as common 
(we don't even have it available around here).

The topic of integrating an internal ADSL modem also came around but we 
concluded that, albeit cool, that wasn't practical since:

- we also need to support cable and "dedicated circuits" (which give you an 
IP/ethernet interface even if they use SHDSL for example)
- if a problem arised we might have to be opening the box to replace the modem 
on a customer site which makes technical interventions more complex (please 
note that the lifetime of a Soekris is probably much higher than the one of an 
ADSL modem)
