Hi Martin,

On my dead board I have not observed the ethernet leds flashing randomly - I essentially get all synchronized flash when reset button is pressed and then all ethernet leds off. That said, I wasn't watching it too closely before it died :( ...

Since then I've been testing the dead board on my lab power supply - it's the type with digital read-out where I can set voltage with a dial and observe both voltage and current draw and I can say with confidence that this problem is not related to power supply.

At the moment my backup board, a net5501, is working admirably .. my config requires three or five 100BT or gigE ethernet ports .. not sure what other fan-less alternatives there are out there ..

Hi

I have shipped in 4 boards with the exact same issue to soekris in Denmark last
week. And I have one more lying around with the error.
Some of our clients have seen this issue, where it suddenly stopped working,
and could then not boot back up. We have spend a lot of time to go out and fix
at random times, and replace the boards.
Sometimes after they have been turned off for a while they will boot again, but
then right after a power cycle, go dead again.
So I had gathered a few from our installations, and where beginning to become a
big problems as more of them die.

While they have this issue, it can normally also see the Ethernet diodes flash
randomly at low power.

They all have similar serial number, and have the black heatsink that is just a
flat plate.

Hi Conrad,

I did manage to get to uManager - that was sort of a baud issue - I'd up'ed my
baud rate to 115200 many moons ago and had forgotten about that .. tried a
number of times and finally came up with the correct incantation of power-cycle
and key presses. Used uManager to upload the newest bios into flash, which it
did. Browsed through flash and contents seemed reasonable. Then used that
bios uploaded into flash to
update the uManager itself, which incidentally also worked. So I
guess that means that flash is okay, as is the uManager. Can't say the same
for the bios or the board, though. Still same booting problems.
Apparently the hardware turns on the RED led and the bios turns it off once
it's ready launch the OS. I'm guessing something in the bios's board bring up
sequence is getting stuck - maybe it resets a device and then polls a register
forever or somesuch. - just a wild guess. Since there's no sign of any kind of
messages on the console I'm guessing it's getting stuck (presumably waiting for
unresponsive hardware) almost straightaway.

Let me know how your RMA goes - no sense in both of us paying for shipping if
it's a lost cause. :)

In the meantime I wouldn't suggest anyone with a production system
net6501 reboot it without having a ready spare. :)
