 Analyzing the original file with Audition shows that the peak
amplitude is at -40dB from full scale, giving a headroom of 40dB. The
amplitude resolution of the sampling is 16 bits, i.e. about 96dB,
which means 56dB below the peak amplitude. So it looks like that
recording is placed correctly at mid way between the two extremes.
Remember, that station (Voice od Croatia) was not particularly strong,
less than S9 on the Winrad S-meter. Considering that local AM stations
have a signal strength greater than S9+40dB, you may appreciate the
need for an adequate headroom.
