This isn't a mental ray specific issue. I have had the same instability when using netview or Internet Explorer for general use while writing scripts and other basic tasks. There's some kind of conflict going on between the Softimage core and web services on your computer.

It's happened twice in the last 24 hours, and the only common condition seems to be that I've got Firefox up on top checking my email. And don't tell me switch to Arnold.
