Bold statement:
Layoffs create an air of crisis, which leads to fear, which leads to taking a
job for less.

I´ve worked freelance for more than 13 years now.
I´ve seen a lot of people bend or twist when they
felt in danger of losing something as precious as
their a job and was just as much impressed about
the guys happily filling the opened up ranks.
In my late experience, competition has also become
a lot more personal and humiliating while it just
feels less and less difficult to a lot of those
hiring (producers or HR personal) to find cheap
replacements easily.
One could blame youth for stupidity but I´d prefer
to blame those economics 101 classes nobody seems to
have attended until the end.
Cheap tricks give you cheap results quickly.
If so, then why are you asking for a quality in life yourself?

I never know how to take statements like that: "we're laying a ton of people off,
but we're hiring, too." Hiring who? Isnt that just churning? Why would i want to
work for a company that does that? And don't they pretty quickly go thru the entire
available workforce that way?
